“the artists will be present”

After the exhibition at the Kunsthaus Bregenz (April 2006) and in preparation for their individual exhibition at the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris (January 2008) Gelitin are showing large format pictures from their present work at the Galerie Meyer Kainer.

Gelitin’s universe is related to the spirit of Dadaism, Actionism and Situationism. The playful use of the physical is symptomatic. In an Art movement that has been gaining evermore attention, which can be connected to the actualisation of the idea “L’informe”, artists try to blatantly go against the semiotic of the fetish and the spirit of academism.

The artists known for this kind of practise (John Bock, Christoph Büchel, Thomas Hirschhorn, Jonathan Meese et. al.) show processes of the Antihierarchical, the Scatological, the Antiformal and Entropy. Basic principles like the destruction of the form, the demystification of the material and the conscious inclusion of coincidences of eroticism and humour, can be understood as models.

According to these principles, the solo show consists of large format mainly brown pictures by Gelitin, in the malleable material plasticine. Surging natural and creative elements jump out of the amorphous mass.

Christian Egger: “ Flat compositions of sexless historyless Voodoo lemmings, mellow as well as scared, in a fatal symbiosis with open mouths and countless empty eyes, organic creatures in deformed fusion with others, as monstrous, hallucinatory social remains, superimposed masses of plasticine on wood in “bad painting” and large format – alive, functioning, well painted.”

Nach ihrer Ausstellung im Kunsthaus Bregenz (April 2006) und in Vorbereitung auf die Einzelaus-stellung im Musée d´Art Moderne de Paris (Jänner 2008) zeigen gelitin in der Galerie Meyer Kainer ab 15. Februar großformatige Bilder aus ihrem aktuellen Werkzyklus.

Der Kosmos von gelitin ist dem Geist von Dadaismus, Aktionismus und Situationismus verwandt. Symptomatisch ist der spielerische Umgang mit dem Körperlichen.
In einer seit Mitte der 90er Jahre in verstärktem Maße sichtbar werdenden Kunstbewegung, die man mit einer Aktualisierung des Bataillischen Begriffes „L’ informe“ in Verbindung bringen kann, wird offensichtlich versucht, die Semiotik des Fetischs und den Geist des Akademismus gegen den Strich zu bürsten.
Die Praxis der in diesem Zusammenhang immer wieder genannten Künstler (John Bock, Christoph Büchel, Thomas Hirschhorn, Jonathan Meese et. al.) weist Operationen des Antihierarchischen, des Skatologischen, des Antiformalen und des Entropischen auf. Grundsätze wie die Zerschlagung der Form, die Entmystifizierung des Materials und die bewusste Einbindung des Zufälligen, von Erotik und Humor, können als Leitbilder verstanden werden.

Dementsprechend sind die großformatigen Wandbilder von gelitin, die in der Ausstellung solitär gezeigt werden, im knetbaren Spielmaterial Plastilin gefertigt und vorwiegend in Braun gehalten. Der amorphen Masse entspringen überraschende Elemente des Kreatürlichen.

Christian Egger: „Flache Kompositionen geschlechts- und geschichtsloser Voodoo-Lemminge, lieblich wie ängstlich, in verhängnissvoller Symbiose, starrmündig und mit vielen, leeren Augen, organische Kreaturen in verformender Fusion mit anderen, als monströse halluzinative, soziale Reste, übereinander geknetete Patzer von Plastilin auf Trägerholz im bad painting und Großformat – lebendige, funktionierende, gute Malerei.”
